WorksMatch: Claim musical works and recordings

WorksMatch: Claim musical works and recordings

Identify musical works, enhance repertoires and maximize publishing revenue with WorksMatch, Luminate’s flagship data enrichment product.

WorksMatch is a cloud-based tool that facilitates accurate musical asset identification across the digital distribution landscape. Our technology matches ISWCs to ISRCs quickly, efficiently and at scale for full coverage and unmatched insight.

Revenue for rights holders

Accurate, comprehensive linking of ISWCs to ISRCs and other IDs allows publishers, labels and artists to find all streaming activity in order to receive proper credit and payment for their work.

Asset monitoring

Regularly monitor, update and (if needed) claim musical assets on all major DSPs.

Repertoire enhancement

Revenues can depend on the technical quality of a repertoire. WorksMatch helps ensure that no recording remains unclaimed due to missing or incomplete repertoire data.

Efficiency and cost savings

WorksMatch automates the labor-intensive, error-prone process of manually matching musical works to recordings and entering information.

Discrepancy resolution

We can help you and your partners highlight and resolve data gaps, discrepancies and ID mismatches.

What WorksMatch does

We developed WorksMatch to accurately identify musical work identifiers and attach them to recordings on digital distribution services. Its most important function is to link International Standard Musical Work Codes (ISWC) to International Standard Recording Codes (ISRC). Our team can then help manage, augment and export linked ISWC-ISRC data.

ISWC-ISRC matching

An ISWC is an alphanumeric identifier assigned to a unique musical composition

An ISRC is an alphanumeric identifier assigned to a unique recording of a musical performance.

One ISWC can be linked to multiple ISRCs, like Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” and its many recordings over the decades. The “Landslide” ISWC, which identifies Stevie Nicks as the composer, is linked to dozens and dozens of ISRCs on various streaming platforms. These ISRCs include alternate recordings from the same artist as well as remixes and covers by other artists—some of which may be unclaimed by the rights holders.

These identifiers play a vital role in managing intellectual property rights. They enable worldwide licensing, royalty distribution and copyright enforcement.

WorksMatch services

We offer WorksMatch ISWC-ISRC matching as a recurring service or on a project basis. We deliver matches and associated metadata in table (spreadsheet) format.

Catalog claims: One-time matching

Submit one or more ISWCs and we’ll return a list of linked ISRCs as a one-time delivery. As the rights holder, you can then cross-reference the ISWC-ISRC matches with DSP activity on royalty statements to ensure you’re earning the correct amount of revenue for the work(s).

Client provides:

  • ISWC*

  • Title**

  • Author / Composer / Songwriter**

  • Known linked ISRCs

Luminate returns:

  • Work title(s)

  • Contributors to the work (and their IPIs)

  • Linked ISRCs

  • All other known linked IDs

*Priority input/minimum information needed

**Alternate inputs if priority inputs are not known

Recurring claims: Daily or weekly matching

Submit one or more ISWCs for recurring WorksMatch treatment. The Data Enrichment team will cross-check our identifier database with major DSPs and return new ISRC matches on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.

Managed services: Automated matching

Finally, we offer managed services that include fully automated ISWC-ISRC matching. We’ll store your data locally and notify you when WorksMatch detects a change that affects any ISWC in your catalog. These automated “anytime” notifications are powered by Google’s Pub/Sub secure communications software.

Included metadata enrichment

All WorksMatch deliveries include metadata enrichment.

When we return a table of ISWC-ISRC matches, we draw from our extensive identifier dataset to attach all relevant IDs to each entry, not just ISWCs and ISRCs. We include name variants, links to other artists and other key details that help disambiguate artists. Our documentation complies with the requirements of distributors, clients, partners or rights management organizations.

Our dataset covers:

International standard IDs
  • ISNI

  • ISRC

  • ISWC

  • BOWI

  • IPI

Artist metadata
  • Name variants and aliases

  • Name translations

  • Relationships to other artists

  • Collaborations

  • Contributions to musical works
