Ranking Report steps

From the CONNECT sidebar menu, select Report Builder > Ranking.

  1. Choose what to rank

Select the type of musical entity you want to rank—SONG, RECORDING, RELEASE GROUP, PRODUCT or ARTIST—from the top row of tabs.

Ranking types
Report Builder fields and menu options differ among categories. Choosing to rank a different type of entity will reset some of your selections.

RECORDING = ISRC-level ranking.
PRODUCT = ICPN-level ranking.

  1. Name your report

Title your report something descriptive, like “2024 Houston Top 1000 streamed artists YTD.” An ideal report title is short and to the point, but detailed enough to differentiate from your other reports (Report Builder > Management).

See blank Report Builder: Ranking (Song)

  1. Set time frame and location

Beneath the report title field, you can customize Time Frame, Location and Markets (if applicable). Use these fields or the top menu bar to change the default time frame and location.

See Time Frame selection
Choose a time frame option or accept the default selection of Current Week. To define your own date range, select Custom, then use the calendar to highlight your desired dates or type your own Start Date / End Date.

Be sure to APPLY CHANGES before closing the Time Frame menu.

Note that all Ranking Reports export with ATD and YTD values included for each item regardless of selected time frame.

See Location selection
Scroll to choose a country from the dropdown or type a country name in the Search Location bar above. You can also accept the default* country selection or choose Worldwide for a global aggregate view.

Your report will now rank entities based on consumption data within your chosen location.

*Go to Settings in the main CONNECT menu to change your default Location across the platform.

  1. Choose depth and activity

The next line specifies how many items to rank and how to rank them. Click the fields to fill in “Top [Click to add depth] Songs/Release Groups/Artists, Ranked By [Click to add activity].”

Depth means “number of list items;” activity means Streams, Song Sales or Product Sales.

Ex. Top 20,000 Songs Ranked By Streams

See Depth selection

See Activity selection
Click an activity to see optional filters. Default settings leave all filtering options on.

This example sets Activity Type to Streams and does not filter out any Commercial Model, Service Type or Content Type breakouts.

These parameters are mandatory. You won’t be able to click BUILD REPORT until you choose a depth and activity type, even if you don’t apply any other filters.

  1. Set additional criteria

Depth, activity and musical entity type are the minimum criteria needed for a Ranking Report. You can add filters to narrow your ranking criteria and generate a more complex report.

Click Additional Criteria to open Data Controls. Select as many filters as apply to your report, then APPLY CHANGES.

See Data Controls menu
Data Controls include Time Frame, Location and standard Report Options (see steps 2-4 above). The Additional Criteria menu section houses even more optional filters, like Release Age and Genre.

Use the Data Controls menu to review and adjust your selections. Be sure to APPLY CHANGES before generating your report.

Release Age

Filter by Release Age to see data on Current, Catalog or Deep Catalog music. Use the sliders to change these ranges. Release Age filters can help you assess the state of new music consumption compared to older releases—or vice versa.

See Release Age selection

Use the sliders to set custom release age bands or accept the defaults as shown. Then check or uncheck the release age categories you want to include.

Can I see "Current" releases from past dates?
Short answer: Yes.

Release Ages are relative to your Time Frame selection. The Current/Catalog/Deep Catalog spans extend backward from your selected date range, not from today’s date—unless today’s date is part of your report. If you set up a report to rank albums from 2020, music released during that timespan will be classified as Current, not Catalog.

Genre Databases

Choose between Billboard and Luminate genres to build a genre-specific report. Billboard genres reflect Billboard classification criteria. Luminate genres (default selection) offer a wider selection of genres and a deeper genre hierarchy.

What does "Use Main Genre Only" mean?
This option is selected by default. It restricts genre selection to the designated Main Genre of an artist, song or release group. Uncheck this box to include entities with different Main Genres that still have your selection(s) assigned as secondary or alternate genres.

  1. Compile your report

Your selected criteria should now appear in the Report Builder. If you’re satisfied, hit the BUILD REPORT button at bottom left. You should see a pop-up window confirming your submission with a title and ID.

From here, you can build another report using the same parameters as a starting point, build a new report from scratch or see your in-progress report on the Management page.
