Data Controls: Activity Types, Breakout Views and filters

Data Controls: Activity Types, Breakout Views and filters

Dashboards generate dynamic charts, graphs and grids based on your selections for Location, Time Frame and Activity Type.

Beyond these three essential settings, CONNECT offers an array of other tools to filter, focus and organize your analysis. These can be found in the Data Controls menu. Use Data Controls to set more precise parameters, filter out irrelevant data and add detail to grids and graphs.

Top menu bar

Time Frame, Location and Activity Type can be set from the dropdowns in the top menu bar. Sometimes, clicking the dropdowns will open the Data Controls menu as an overlay instead.

The icon opens the full Data Controls menu as an overlay to the right of the page.

The Data Controls menu

CONNECT requires you to set certain parameters on every page (or accept the defaults). Other settings are optional. Open Data Controls to see all settings and view options at once.

For those who prefer one-stop shopping: yes, you can adjust Activity, Time Frame and Location from the Data Controls menu as well as the top menu bar.

Data Controls main menu
The Data Controls menu will appear as an overlay to the right of the page.

As you navigate and adjust Data Controls, an icon will appear next to options you’ve selected but have not yet confirmed. Always APPLY CHANGES to confirm your options and refresh the page with your selections applied.

When in doubt: hit RESET SETTINGS to start over with default filters.

Data Controls hierarchy: Required and optional settings

REQUIRED: Set your focus

Activity Type

Set an Activity Type to determine the focus of a Dashboard, Analysis or Report. Some CONNECT features can include more than one, but you must choose at least one (or accept the default selection).

Time Frame and Location

Edit date and location parameters from the top menu bar or the Data Controls menu as desired.

OPTIONAL: Refine your analysis

Breakout View / Activity Options

Breakout options are dependent on Activity Type. Choose a Breakout View or opt for total figures with no breakouts.

The Activity Options section of the Data Controls menu offers Breakout Views as filters. Check or uncheck boxes to include/exclude segments.

Filters

Refine your analysis with optional data filters, like Release Age, Genre or Format. Available filters and menu sections change based on your selections for everything else.

Grid Options

Finally, Data Controls offers a few options to change the way CONNECT organizes your data. Edit grid layouts, include or exclude metrics and otherwise tweak displays.

Why can’t I select _______?

Some data controls are conditional. They aren’t relevant to every Activity Type or CONNECT feature. Some options are not available for every account. The Data Controls menu automatically removes or grays out filters that aren’t selectable or don’t make sense.

Activity Type

Luminate tracks five categories of music consumption activity: Streams, Product Sales, Song Sales, Airplay Spins and Airplay Audience. (Read more about them in Activity Types).

CONNECT emphasizes one activity at a time. You must set an Activity Type (or accept the default selection) to proceed.

Top menu bar: Activity Type selection

Use the dropdown in the second-row menu bar to choose an activity.

Setting an Activity Type automatically refreshes all displays on a Dashboard to lead with relevant data.

Activity Type accent colors

We use a distinct accent color to highlight each activity in graphs and grids, with some shade variation for breakout segments.

Streams are blue.
Song Sales are purple.
Product Sales are orange.
Airplay Spins and Airplay Audience are pink.

Choosing a new Activity Type will change accent colors all over the Dashboard.

Here's how displays for the same Dashboard look when you set Activity Type to Streams, Song Sales or Product Sales:

See an example: Grid with accent colors

Grid Views also use our Activity Type colors to showcase relevant data. Grids display all activities at once, but your selected Activity Type always stands out in highlighted columns.

Streams highlighted in blue

Product Sales highlighted in orange

Time Frame

By default, CONNECT shows data for the current chart week (Fri-Thu) in your location. Change these on any page from the top menu bar.

Time Frame options are also included in the main Data Controls menu.

Clicking Time Frame from either location opens a date selection menu with an interactive calendar tool. Scroll up and down or use the month and year dropdowns to navigate the calendar.

Calendar options

Date selection menus vary for different CONNECT features, but most pages offer Current week, Last week, Year to Date and Custom time frames.

Set custom date ranges by clicking your desired start and end dates in the calendar. You can also manually enter dates, in any date format (12/18/2023, Dec 18 ‘23, etc.) to pick a date range.

Note that the calendar is organized based on the chart week, Fri-Th. Select a date range in weeks using the week #s to the left of the calendar grid. Some features, like Charts and Analysis, only permit date selection in weekly intervals.

Location

CONNECT can display combined worldwide data as well as country-level data for 50+ countries.

Click Locations to open the menu of available countries. Scroll or search to select a country.
See Location selection
Choose a country from the dropdown or start typing to search. You can only select one country at a time (or opt for a worldwide aggregate).

Changing your location may result in different KPI displays and Activity Type options. For example, setting a Worldwide view in Analysis will show Stream Equivalents instead of Album Equivalents.
See Market selection

We receive market-level data from within the U.S. and Canada.

Change National (default option) to United States Market or Canada Market, then check or uncheck the markets you want to include. Note that this option removes some national providers from the aggregate, resulting in a lower total figure.

Market-level data is only viewable for certain CONNECT subscribers. If market data is unavailable for your account or location, the Markets dropdown will appear grayed out.

Activity Options

Include, exclude and filter consumption activity with more precision by setting Activity Options.

See Activity Options selection
Some activities can be filtered by breakout or format. Click an activity > and check or uncheck boxes to include the breakout segments you want to see.

If you exclude a breakout segment, Grid Views will display all values in that column as 0.

Release Type and Format filters
Some filters apply to multiple activities and breakouts. Open Data Controls and scroll to Activity Options > Release Type and Format to include or exclude categories across the entire Dashboard.

These filters cover more than one activity, but the specifics may differ. Some selections appear grayed out based on whether you’ve set a Dashboard to Streams or Product Sales.

Release Type and Format don’t apply to Song Sales.

Airplay Format filters
Optional: Filter Airplay activity by format. You can only choose one format at a time.

Formats labeled (Billboard) correspond to official Billboard Airplay charts. Formats without (Billboard) are Luminate-only formats; we maintain these to provide a fuller picture of Airplay activity.

Grid Options

Finally, Grid Options allow you to add detail to Grid Views throughout a Dashboard or Analysis. These tools don't filter consumption data; they simply add or remove rows and columns from your grids and exports.

Set Stacked Grids
Basic Grids are enabled by default. Change this setting to Stacked Grids to see Streams or Product Sales in more detail by category. Stacked grid views create hierarchical, nested layers for activity types and breakouts. Select up to three stacking categories and drag to rearrange hierarchy.

APPLY CHANGES to refresh the page, then set any Activity pane to Grid View by clicking … at top right.

Expand and collapse Stacked Grid columns
Stacked Grids are interactive. Expand > and collapse < columns and headers to show or hide values at each level.

Expanding all layers in a stack can widen your grid considerably. Scroll left and right to see all values.

Click ... at top right to export any grid with your Data Controls applied. Exporting a stacked grid automatically expands all fields and includes values at every level in the exported CSV or Excel sheet.

Aggregates & Comparisons: ATD and YTD
Open Aggregates & Comparisons > to include Year to Date (YTD) and/or Activity to Date (ATD) values on a Dashboard.

Selecting Year to Date and/or Activity to Date will add rows to all Grid Views and exports.

Activity Over Time grids will display combined overall ATD and YTD values for your selected time frame.

Activity by Location grids will list ATD and YTD values for each country or market.
